A section of the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi could reopen by the end of the year, after being closed for repairs since early October. The parkway's maintenance chief, Greg Smith, told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that the project’s contractor has until Jan. 1 to finish work or face financial penalties. The Natchez Trace is a scenic route that runs 444 miles (714.5 kilometers) from Natchez, Mississippi, to Nashville, Tennessee. Another project will keep a longer section of the parkway in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, and into Alabama at least partially closed until the summer. The next phase begins in the spring, and work is expected to end by summer.
